Interview: Nico Villanueva
Nico Villanueva is known for his portraiture and fashion photography. I had the opportunity to talk to Nico about how he got started in photography and he gives his best advice to aspiring photographers.
Where are you from? What camera do you shoot with?
I am from San Diego but currently reside in Bellevue, Washington. I shoot with a Canon 6D Mark I.
Favorite type of photography?
Fashion photography is my favorite type because of the styling and retouching aspects of it.
Do you have a formal education in photography, or are you self taught?
I have only taken two basic photography classes. Most of everything I know now came from watching tutorial videos online. I’ve also learned quite a bit from assisting and second shooting for other photographers.
If you only had one lens, what would it be and why?
50mm. It’s a good in-between my usual kit, the 35, 50, and 85mm.
Who are your inspirations?
Lara Jade. I simply love her aesthetic, work ethic, and ability to teach.
What’s the best piece of photography advice you’ve been given?
“Shoot what you want to see.” Very simple and it’s what sparked my love for harsh light.
